LEA PATERSON AND JONATHAN CURTISS, Bank of England

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, HUMAN RESOURCES
PATTERN WORKED: 3 DAYS PER WEEK EACH

As Executive Directors, Lea and Jonathan lead a team of around 100 colleagues who are charged with helping to recruit, develop and retain a diverse pool of talent. They are responsible for shaping and delivering the HR strategy and ensuring that it aligns with the Bank’s mission. They also sit on the Executive Committee which is responsible for day-to-day management of the Bank. Lea and Jonathan are the first job share at ED level, which is just one rung below that of the Deputy Governors. Lea spends her days away from the role with her family as well as studying for a CIPD level 7 qualification. Jonathan is employed by the Bank for his other two days, which he spends leading core aspects of the Bank’s strategy.

ACTING DIRECTOR OF STRATEGY
PATTERN WORKED: 3 DAYS PER WEEK EACH

Beth and Rachel have recently been appointed to the role of Acting Director of Strategy, responsible for setting up a new strategy unit within the Cabinet Office. The role sees them working closely with the board and ministers on the Cabinet Office’s future direction and the department’s performance and delivery. Prior to this appointment, they were the first Principal Private Secretary job share in the Civil Service, working as PPS to John Manzoni – Chief Executive of the Civil Service and Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Office. Beth and Rachel have operated as a job share for two years, valuing the balance it offers between fast-paced, motivating opportunities and space for commitments beyond work – they each have two young children and Beth also volunteers at Alexandra Palace.

DIRECTOR, MENTAL HEALTH, DEMENTIA AND DISABILITIES
PATTERN WORKED: 3 DAYS PER WEEK EACH

This is the third time that Frances and Sophie have worked together as a job share, and the second role they have secured after applying as a team. Reporting to the Secretary of State at the DHSC, they are responsible for policy in relation to mental health, dementia and disability, working to ensure that the NHS is run safely and effectively, in patients’ best interests. They manage a team of 50, split between their London and Leeds offices. Frances and Sophie have five children between them, and see job sharing as a way to fulfil their ambitions within a demanding role whilst still spending time with their families. They mentor a number of job share partnerships and full and part time individuals across Whitehall.

HEAD OF DAYTIME
PATTERN WORKED: 3 DAYS PER WEEK EACH

Clare and Jane are jointly responsible for over 3,000 hours of television a year, including Good Morning Britain, Loose Women, Tipping Point and The Chase. Their role involves commissioning new shows as well as ensuring that long-running favourites continue to captivate their audiences. Clare and Jane have worked together for 25 years, and have previously produced flagships shows including Dancing on Ice and This Morning. They joined ITV as Commissioning Editor as a jobshare partnership and were promoted to Head of Daytime with the same arrangement. Between them, they have four young children, and chose to work fewer hours in order to maximise the time they can spend with their growing families.

NATIONAL HEAD OF THE PLANNING TEAM
PATTERN WORKED: 3 DAYS PER WEEK EACH

Lisa and Kathryn have recently been appointed as National Head of the Planning Team, leading a team of 16 of Shoosmiths’ specialist planning lawyers. They are responsible for guiding team strategy and leading on new business development, aiming to hit an annual team target of £4 million in fees by 2020. In their previous role as senior partners they were charged with growing the firm’s business in the north, operating within a £15 million budget and managing a team of lawyers across the North of England. Lisa and Kathryn have been job sharing for over 10 years, and believe that it is the perfect way to deliver on career ambitions whilst also being present at home. They have been promoted three times during that time, including to their current role.

ENSEMBLE MEMBER
PATTERN WORKED: 3 SHOWS AND 5 SHOWS

In a first for London’s theatre scene, Charlene and Jenny share the performance of an ensemble role in 42nd Street, at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. The role is physically demanding, and the arrangement allows them both to deliver a consistently high-energy performance whilst still enjoying a fulfilling life outside the theatre. Charlene and Jenny developed their arrangement after Jenny covered Charlene’s maternity leave. On her return, they agreed to split the week between them, allowing Charlene to spend more time with her son Jenson and Jenny to take on teaching work at top dance schools such as Bird College and Italia Conti. They speak regularly to their peers and the media to raise awareness of the possibilities of job sharing in the arts.

HEAD OF NETWORK SPONSORSHIP
PATTERN WORKED: 3 / 4 DAYS PER WEEK

Jointly leading a portfolio of more than 1500 projects across Transport for London and local borough roads, Penelope and Sam will oversee £0.8bn of investment over the next five years. They are focused on making London a safer, happier environment for all, delivering investments which directly contribute to the Mayor of London’s Transport Strategy objectives. Amongst their achievements is the delivery of the Safer Junctions programme. Penelope and Sam became job share partners after Penelope was seconded to cover Sam’s role when he was managing another programme. For Penelope, this delivers a fulfilling career alongside caring for her two children; for Sam, the opportunity to balance his work with other passions, such as sculpture.

GLOBAL VICE PRESIDENT OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
PATTERN WORKED: 3 DAYS PER WEEK EACH

Responsible for the R&D function of Unilever’s £1.5bn Oral Care business, Shelagh and Jane lead a team of 140 people, with seven directors, across multiple global locations. They are accountable for everything from breakthrough oral care research through to the introduction of new products into the factory for production. They have launched numerous innovative products, brought several disruptive technologies to the market and implemented strategic change initiatives to support the ongoing growth of their part of the business. The first VP level job share at Unilever, Shelagh and Jane designed their partnership to allow them more time outside of work for their personal interests and passions. They spend their crossover day working on strategic R&D initiatives.
