New legislation, which makes it easier for employees to negotiate a flexible working arrangement, has now become law, and the rights came into force on 6th April 2024.
UK employees have gained enhanced rights to ask for flexible working – including from Day One in a new job. Are your HR and recruitment teams ready for this key change? What about your line managers and hiring managers? Perhaps you are well versed in the legislative changes and want to ensure you are going above and beyond in order to attract candidates and demonstrate your commitment to new ways of working. Whatever the case – we are here to help.
The new rights allow employees to request flexible working from their first day of employment in a new job, reduce the timeframe for an employer to respond to requests within and increase the number of times an employee can put a request in, within a 12-month period. Take up is expected to be wide, particularly from groups including parents, carers, older people and people with disabilities and illnesses.
Managed and communicated well, your approach to Day One Flex can become a tool for greater diversity and inclusion within your hiring processes and beyond.
Don’t know where to start? Our flexible working experts are here to help.
We’ll review your current practice and policy using our Timewise flexibility maturity framework. We’ll look at flexible hiring and progression and how you manage flexible working requests. Our expert team will make informed recommendations to help update your practice, highlighted in a short assessment report.
Our experts will create a bespoke workshop for your team, whether this be for line managers, hiring managers, or resourcing specialists. Workshops will be tailored by job role, and where you need and want to focus, but will all include briefing on the new legislation, working through real-life scenarios, sharing examples and practice, practice, practice. Your team will leave the workshop feeling confident and informed – whether this is about how best to design and advertise flex roles, or how to have great conversations with team members making flex requests.
