NHS Flex for the Future Programme – resource library

Welcome to the resource library for the NHS Flex for the Future programme. This library is designed to be used by Change Team members from organisations that are participating in the programme.

Below you will find all the tools and materials that you’ll need as you work through the programme, together with copies of the workshop recordings and slides for you to watch again or share with colleagues. Each workshop will have an accompanying booklet containing information, useful references, tools and checklists.

Workshop 1: Programme kick off

30 September 2021, 09:30 to 11:00

This workshop gives an overview of the Flex for the Future programme and the model we’ll be using to guide our work together. We clarify what we mean by flexible working in the NHS, and the commitments around flexibility contained within the NHS People Plan. We also take a look at the business case for flex relating to key NHS priorities of retention, wellbeing, workforce supply and diversity.

Workshop 2: Where are you now?

19 October 2021. 09:30 to 11:30

Workshop 2 focuses on collecting, collating and analysing workforce and demographic data within your NHS organisation, considering what qualitative and quantitative data may be useful. The tools and resources in this section will help you to gather and use data to assess your organisation’s current position in relation to flexibility and gain insight about how this relates to your key priorities and workforce challenges.

Workshop 3 – What works to drive change?

23 November 2021, 09:30 to 11:30

This workshop helps you to identify the key areas that NHS organisations need to address to achieve change in flexible working practices. Using the Flex for the Future Programme Model, we take a deep dive into leadership and culture, policy and process, manager capability, talent acquisition and progression and social responsibility, and share examples of what works to drive change in each of these areas.

Workshop 4 – Action planning

15 December 2021, 09:30 to 11:30

Workshop 4 focuses on developing and refining your organisational Action plan on flexibility, supporting you to take priority areas for your NHS organisation and identify actions to take in these.  Sharing stories and working through examples will help you develop your thinking about what your own organisational plan should contain. The tools and resources in this section provide you with templates to help you create your own plan, and to confidently share it with leaders within your organisation.

Workshop 5 – Designing flexible jobs

25 January 2022, 09:30 to 11:30

This workshop upskills you to be able to design flexible jobs, know the key considerations for shift based and non-shift based roles, and understand the different types of flexible solutions available. We also focus on issues such as trust and fairness, wellbeing and work life balance, and think about how to make team based conversations about flexibility as consistent and productive as possible.

Workshop 6 – Sharing our success

3 March 2022, 09:30 to 11:30

This final workshop provides an opportunity to share learning and successes in implementing flexible change. Focussing on how to keep your implementation on track, we share hints and tips about potential pitfalls and how to avoid them. We also consider the importance of ongoing review and evaluation, and participants share experiences and achievements so far within their organisations.
